According to a new research released on Friday, the total number of 5G smartphones shipped globally in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2023 exceeded 2 billion units, with Apple and Samsung leading the pack.

Counterpoint Research claims that this was accomplished in the least amount of time—less than five years—when compared to earlier technologies like 4G or 3G. It took six years for 4G cellphones to get to this point.

The analysts said that “the affordability and accessibility of 5G smartphones have improved due to the narrowing price gap between 5G and 4G chipsets, along with OEMs’ (original equipment manufacturer) strategic component selection to maintain the bill of materials (BOM) cost.”

Western Europe, the US, and China are the three developed smartphone markets that accounted for almost 70% of total 5G shipments. Together, Apple and Samsung delivered over one billion devices.

The research claims that smartphone manufacturers have aggressively pushed 5G features and capabilities in order to set themselves apart in a fiercely competitive industry.

The first iPhones with 5G capability, the iPhone 12 series, marked a major turning point in the adoption of 5G, as worldwide 5G sales surpassed 100 million devices in a single quarter for the first time in Q4 2020. With 200 million units shipped in a single quarter in Q42023, the shipments set a new record as the trend continued.

Analysts have indicated that 5G smartphones come with everything needed to go into developing economies’ more inexpensive sectors. Thus, the next billion 5G smartphone sales will be driven by growing countries like Southeast Asia and India.
