In the German men’s javelin throw competition, 19-year-old Dehning won the meet with a throw of 90.20 meters, undefeated. It surpassed the previous record of 89.58 meters, established in Stockholm in 1990 by British athlete Steve Backley, to establish a new European U23 record.

It was Dehning’s maiden try at a 90-meter throw. His second throw was 85.45 meters long. The remaining attempts were rejected or skipped altogether.

“I couldn’t train properly last week because I was sick,” Dehning said to the leichtathletik.de website. “I was astonished that everything went so well, even though I really wanted to compete here.”

Nico Rensmann finished just over 13.6 meters shy of the record in the Halle competition with an attempt of 76.56 meters.

Additionally, at 88.46 meters, it broke the previous record set by current German national coach Boris Obergföll (then Boris Henry) for the U23 division.

Max Dehning, a two-time silver medalist at the World U20 Championships, comfortably surpassed the 85.50-meter barrier with his performance, meeting the entrance criteria for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

But meeting the admission requirement is just one step in the Olympic qualifying process. Max Dehning’s selection to the NOC squad for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris will be decided in final by National Olympic Committees.

Additionally, the throw satisfied the requirements for participation for the 2024 European Athletics Championships, which will take place in Rome, Italy in June.

Dehning’s prior best was set at a Leverkusen meet in 2022 with a distance of 79.13 meters. His most recent performance was slightly over his previous best by almost 11 meters.
