Apple is reportedly developing a new generation of MacBook Pro models that will be driven by a fourth-generation Apple Silicon processor, also known as the M4 chip, months after the company introduced the M3 CPU in the current MacBook Pro series.

The Cupertino-based behemoth has reportedly begun work on the MacBook Pro M4 model, which is anticipated to launch later this year as the replacement for the M3-powered 2023 model, according to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg. In answer to a reader question, Gurman said in the Power On newsletter’s Q&A section, “Maybe I will pick up an M4 MacBook Pro, which, by the way, just started formal development.”

The impending new generation is yet unknown, but the M4 chip is expected to offer several upgrades, including enhanced AI capabilities. It may also include an improved neural engine with additional cores to tackle AI-related tasks. In addition, the CPU is anticipated to resemble the rumored A18 Pro chip that powers the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models this year.

The 3nm A17 Pro chip powers the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, while the business offers M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max processors for the newest versions of the iMac, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro.

Apple’s M3 processor, which powers the most recent MacBook Pro models, was released in October 2023. It is based on the same 3-nanometer technology as the A17 Pro CPU, which drives the 15 Pro. Even more performance is available for premium MacBook Pro setups with the M3 versions.

Although the M4 MacBook Pro’s release date is still unknown, the company’s custom of keeping a year and a half between releases points to a potential introduction in the first half of 2025. Previous launches of the M1 chip occurred in November 2020, M2 in June 2022, and M3 at the end of October 2023.

A week ago, Apple also revealed the much anticipated 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air models that are equipped with the new M3 CPU. Calling the M3 MacBook Air “the world’s best consumer laptop for AI,” Apple promises enhanced battery life along with performance improvements of up to 60%.
