When they were ready to depart on Tuesday to officially open development projects in the city, district Congress president Sanjay Talwar and three-time firebrand parliamentarian Bittu—who had been representing Ludhiana for the previous two terms before winning a seat from Anandpur Sahib in 2014—were placed under preventive arrest at the MP’s local residence.

The Member of Parliament emphasized that sports and athletes shouldn’t be forced to suffer because of the political squabble, saying that sports are the only thing that our future generations have. Punjabis have always excelled in sports.

Bittu officially opened the newly constructed athletic track at Guru Nanak Stadium, which was constructed at a cost of Rs 8.5 crore under the Smart City Mission and had been waiting for more than four months for the official inauguration. Bittu was flanked by Mamta Ashu, the wife of former Congress minister and municipal councillor Bharat Bhushan Ashu.

“We are launching the sports complex at Guru Nanak Stadium today, which has been finished for the last four months but hasn’t been accessible to athletes,” the Congress Member stated, asserting that the world-class stadium and its amenities were designed and finished by the previous Congress administration.

It has the newest athletic track in the world, relayed as part of the Smart City Mission at a cost of Rs 8.5 crore. As an MP, I conceptualized and carried out the whole plan,” Bittu said, adding that the stadium has numbered seats and has a football and athletics field with sprinklers.

He said that since the stadium had not been used for a few months, it had begun to wear and tear. We’ve opened it up to the general public and athletes today. “This is a gift to the people of Ludhiana and Punjab, where aspiring athletes will receive training in various sports and athletics,” Bittu said, criticizing Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for what he described as the athletes’ and games’ “lackadaisical attitude.”

The MP continued, saying that the CM had been so busy that he had been unable to dedicate the stadium for a number of months. He jokingly said, “The current government is more into fanfare and publicity than public service.”

Later, he and Talwar also went to the Shaheed Udham Singh community facility in the Ludhiana East constituency. Built at a cost of Rs 5 crore on more than 2 acres, the building was designed by the renowned architect.
